They Might Be Giants

The news that Law and Order is being cancelled after 20 years may not
seem that big a deal, but the reasoning behind its cancellation is an
interesting one. The series, which I should make clear I do not, nor
have I ever watched - my only brush with it was in an episode of
Friends, I think - is still very much watched, still very much
considered a success. One of its strengths, however, is probably the
main cause of its cancellation. Self contained stories.

The feeling is that the network has enough of a back-log of episodes
that it will be able to re-run them without impacting too greatly the
interest and following of the show. An interesting notion - one that
implies that there is an event horizon, for lack of a better phrase,
when it comes to story telling and the television watching public.

I wonder how many other mediums this idea fits into.
